7 Day Original GM Diet Meal Plan (PDF, Menu & Alternatives)

Sharing is caring!

The GM diet, or General Motors diet, tries to help with lose weight by focusing on specific food groups every day of the week.

Proponents claim that it can help people lose 10-17lbs within one week and burn more fat compared to other diets.

However, because the plan restricts a lot of food groups, essential nutrients may be missing if you follow the plan. It is also likely to be unsustainable long-term. Therefore, it’s best to follow another type of plan or speak to a doctor or health professional first.

This article will cover everything you need to know about the GM diet, plus show what an example GM diet plan would look like.

What is the GM Diet?

Sources claim that the GM diet was created in 1985 by General Motors corporation with the aim of helping its workers lose weight.

It is a 7-day meal plan for quick weight loss. Each day has strict rules about the food groups you are able to eat.

As an example, day 1 focuses on eating fruit with every meal, whereas day 5 focuses on eating large proportions of meat with whole tomatoes.

Because it focuses on specific food groups every day whilst restricting lots of others, it’s very low in important nutrients. There are no studies that support it’s use and is considered a crash diet.

Does it Work for Weight Loss?

People following the GM diet can lose weight. This is because it combines a number of factors, including:

  • Increased fruit and vegetable consumption reduces appetite
  • Reduced consumption of added sugars or processed foods
  • Reduced consumption of refined carbohydrates
  • Lower calorie intake

However, even if you can lose weight with the diet, it is not a very healthy way to go about it because whole food groups are excluded, meaning you are likely to miss key nutrients.

Crash diets like the GM diet are also difficult to follow long-term. This means when you go back to your usual way of eating, people will put the weight they lost back on.

This type of extreme dieting can also be unhealthy in the long-term and can even undermine your weight loss progress. This is because extreme calorie-restrictions can cause the metabolic rate within your body to lower, i.e your body ends up using fewer calories per day than before (1, 2).

Benefits of the GM Diet

Although the GM diet is a crash diet and comes with many problems, there are some associated benefits following it.

Encourages Eating More Fruits and Vegetables

Eating more fruit and vegetables can help people lose weight because they are low in calories and high in fiber.

One large study of over 133,468 people over a 24 year period found that fruit intake was associated with a greater weight loss over time (3).

Many studies find that eating vegetables throughout the day can help you stay a healthy weight whilst reducing your chances of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease (4, 5, 6).

Fewer added sugars

The GM diet eliminates added sugar from foods and drinks.

Studies show that diets high in sugar can cause obesity, inflammation, high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and  high triglycerides. These can all contribute to heart disease (7).

Eating lots of sugar can also cause insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and insulin resistance can strongly increase diabetes risk.

Are the Other Benefits?

Proponents of the diet say those that the diet can help improve skin quality, improve digestion and metabolism and cure irritable bowel syndrome and constipation.

However, there are no studies to back these claims.

Problems with the GM Diet

Although there are benefits and weight loss is possible with the diet, since it is a crash diet, the GM diet poses serious risks.

Lacks Essential Nutrients

Since only certain food groups are eaten on particular days, most days will lack all the vitamins and minerals needed by eating a varied diet of healthy food.

The diet is particularly low in healthy fats and protein.

Protein is important within the body for building and repairing your tissues and maintaining muscle mass (8).

Even in the context of weight loss, high protein foods have been shown to help to increase feelings of fullness, meaning you naturally eat fewer calories and lose weight over time (91011).

There are certain fats like trans and saturated fats that can increase cholesterol and other problems. However, unsaturated fats found in foods like olive oil, avocados and nuts that have a range of health benefits.

One type of fat, omega-3 fatty acids, are particularly healthy. Many studies find it can help across a range of health markers. These include:

  • Lowering inflammation (12, 13, 141516)
  • Favourable effects on body weight (171819)
  • Reduced risk of stroke an heart disease (20)

Short-Term Weight Loss

The diet is not suitable to follow over the long-term. The issue with it so that because it is so restrictive that it is difficult to follow for any period of time.

This means once you finish the diet, you revert back to old eating habits and lose any benefit that following the diet had. Some studies find that dieters often end up heavier than before they started their diet (2122).

Therefore, if you want to lose weight or get healthier, a better alternative is to find a diet or sustainable way of eating that you can maintain indefinitely.

Are There Other Risks?

Because of the lack of nutrients and low calories, conditions such as headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness and dehydration can occur.

How to Follow the GM Diet Plan

The GM diet has different rules that apply to each of the 7 days. However, the main foods allowed within the diet are fruits, vegetables, milk and meat.

The diet also includes a ‘wonder soup’. This is a low-calorie vegetable soup containing foods such as cabbage, celery, tomatoes, carrots and peppers. It is used as a snack to stop cravings until the subsequent meal.

It suggests 8-12 glasses of water a day for hydration. Soda, alcohol and other drinks with calories aren’t allowed.

Exercise is optional. However, it is discouraged during the first 3 day.

This is a possible meal plan that someone would follow on the GM diet.

What’s The Best Alternative to the GM Diet?

Since the GM diet is a crash diet and has some very problematic food choices, it is worth considering following another type a diet.

If you want to choose a scientifically sound diet to follow that is recommended by health professionals as well as lose weight sustainably, the Mediterranean diet is one of the best to follow.

It has been ranked the number 1 diet according to the U.S. News & World Report for multiple years, primarily because of the health benefits and because of how easy it is to follow.

Because it is easy to follow, it is also a good option to lose weight, as it isn’t a diet that is too restrictive and difficult to follow.

One review examining 5 studies found the Mediterranean diet was as effective as other popular diets for weight loss such as the low carb diet. The study found that it can result in up to 22 lbs (10 kg) in 1 year (23).

Many credible organizations suggest following a Mediterranean diet for longevity and health. These include:

Many studies find very positive feedback from people following the Mediterranean diet across a number of different health markers. We’ve listed some studies alongside the health conditions below.

  • Lower risk of cardiovascular events, coronary heart disease,  (24, 25)
  • Lower risk of coronary heart disease (26, 27)
  • Lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes (28)
  • Lower risk of breast cancer (29)
  • Lower risk of obesity (30)
  • Better cognitive function (31)

How to Follow a Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet pyramid below gives a good visual indication of what foods to prioritize.

At the bottom are common staple foods that are to be consumed in large amounts and more frequently. Portion sizes and frequency decline as you go up the pyramid.

The pyramid intentionally does not specify recommended weights of foods or calories. It is only meant to provide an overall look at healthy food choices and their relative proportions.

It does this because good health has been attributed to variation within the overall dietary pattern. The more variety you get within the specified relative allowances per category – the better.
